MISS CALICO CAME TO OUR HOUSE

December 31, 1979 ~ June 23, 1999

I must tell you this little story
It happened about two decades ago
A little kitten came to our house
She was a little "calico".

The next-door lady gave her away
To a woman down the road
She did not stay: she came back
To our house, she slowly strode.

She'd rub her love against your legs
No attention did I give her
Not even to caress at first
Sure ! She had a loving purr.

She had to hunt for all her food
A great hunter she became
She'd bring to me her kill sometimes
Only to make me feel ashame.

I started feeding her one-day
In the house so undisturbed
A name for her, it had to be
"Miss Calico" was just superb.

A special chair I gave to her
When after eating she would go
Only in this chair she laid
Over the years, she would out-grow.

J.R. had built a ped-es-tal
By the window for her to sit
Out over the hay meadow she would look
She ruled her domain, I must admit.

When our neighbor's little boy would come
He wanted to know what she was on
One day I told him, "That's her THRONE"
He tried to say it, but it came out THRONG!

Miss Calico had her loving ways
Won ev-ery-body's heart
They could not help but talk to her
Before they would depart.

Even Dan, our nice postman
Would talk to her, when on the porch he crept
And leaving mail on her bench . . . .
On the bench where she would sleep.

The most pre-cious thing I've seen
Miss Calico do, when spoken to
I'd say, "Oh! I know, you're so pretty"
She'd flop over: with love, to bestow.

In winter was the only time
She would jump up into your lap
Some petting she would take for a-while
And then at you, she'd snap.

She had so many funny antics
When the can opener, she could hear
To the kitchen, she would scamper
To see what morsels you can spare.

She loved this place, she saw it grow
House being built ~ Barn being built
"CALICO MEADOWS", we named our place
All just for her, we have no guilt.

For more than nineteen years, now
We cherished our Miss Calico
Today is the first an-ni-ver-sary
Of the day she had to go.

If there is such a place as
"Cat Heaven", she has to be
Happy and content I wish for her
"Rest in peace with a good heart and Our Love".
