'Twas long ago, we lived in the country
On old U.S. Highway Eighty
Our schoolhouse was a one-roomer
Where we four siblings went, you see.
Our school was remodeled in 1932
A two-roomer: with two doors to the north
Across the center, a partition was built
Division of grades soon came forth.
Don't remember the year it was
Some people moved in nearby
They had three girls and just one boy
One girl was my age for I did pry.
This girl was in my grade at school
Her name was Sarah Mararet Grimm
I found I really like her much
My newfound friend: she was prim.
I would walk in summer months
To her house to visit and play
They had a pony that we would ride
Soon playtime passed: I must be on my way.
Sarah and I went thru school
Eleven grades they had back then
We graduated from Mes-quite High In 1942:
That was way back when
The Grimms move to the big city
And roller~skating was our game
War was on: the boys became servicemen
Good friends were made, I will proclaim.
Like "Rosie, the Riveter"! Would you believe?
Sarah worked on an assembly line
She helped to make those fighter planes
For it was wartime days: she did fine.
'Twas there I do believe she met
And fell in love with a fine young man
A wedding I was invited to. To them
I gave my best wishes, as their life began.
This friend of mine soon had 2 kids
A girl: a boy: that was enough
At times we lived in different states
To keep in touch at time was tough.
Now, that we are getting old
The "Golden Years" are creeping fast
We'll always be the best of friends
With loads of memories of years gone past.
